Tallahassee, FL - The newest study from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement shows that crime rates all over the state have taken a dip.
The "Crime In Florida Abstract" study is a survey that looks at different types of crimes around the state of Florida, including murder, rape, robbery, assault and motor vehicle theft, just to name a few.
The current survey, which covers January and June of 2018 compared to the same months in 2017, shows a downward trend in most crime around the state, including an overall drop in crime of 8%.
"That represents 24,564 fewer indexed crimes," said Jessica Cary, a public information officer with FDLE. "
According to their report, FDLE reports the biggest drop on the study is burglary, which went from 44,373 documented and indexed incidents in 2017, to 36,298, a total drop of 18.2%.
Robbery was the second biggest drop on the list, with numbers dropping from 9,246 to 8,250. A drop of 10.8%.
"We did see domestic violence crimes drop in this report," Cary said, citing a 1.5% drop in domestic violence related crimes including assault, aggravated stalking, and simple stalking which has seen a 23.1% drop.
Murder rates in the state of Florida however increased slightly, jumping from 531 to 545 between January and June of 2018 compared to last year. Cary says one of the biggest factors that played into the increase was the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in which 17 people were killed.
The study also shows that a total of 27,682 stolen vehicles have been recovered between those six months.
