Flagler County, FL – The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) is reporting an increase in counterfeit bill use at small businesses and during sales through websites like Craigslist. Since mid-December, the Sheriff’s Office has seen multiple instances where counterfeit currency was used, including two instances where the bills said “Replica” or “Motion Picture Use Only.” The FCSO warning residents to be cautious as they continue to investigate the incidents.

The FCSO urges individuals to verify a bill’s authenticity before payment is accepted and before sales are complete. Residents are asked to become familiar with the security features presented on every U.S. bill. You can learn more about these security features here. “If you are presented with counterfeit currency, avoid confrontation and call us,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “Any physical descriptions or vehicle descriptions of the suspect are helpful, as is surveillance footage or photos you may take. As a witness, you are a great resource to a responding deputy and you could play a vital role in getting these counterfeiters off the street and into the Green Roof Inn.” To protect yourself from the counterfeit currency floating around Flagler County, you should:
  • Use counterfeit detector pens, which are available at most office supply stores.
  • Check currency security features.
  • Confirm authenticity before completing a sale.
