Palm Coast, FL - A 62-year-old Daytona Beach man is charged in two car burglaries, two attempted burglaries, credit card theft and grand theft auto by the Flagler County sheriff's Office. Deputies found the stolen vehicle early Tuesday morning with Timothy Smith inside.

The vehicle Smith was in had been reported stolen by the Daytona Beach Police Department. FCSO found the vehicle backed into a parking place at a motel on Kingswood Drive. Deputies made contact with Smith who told them that he had gotten the vehicle from an unknown man on a street corner in Daytona Beach. He said he often obtained vehicles in that manner.

Upon further investigation, Smith had a brown checkbook wallet in his back pocket that held a driver's license belonging to Timothy Hanna. Deputies contacted Hanna who told them that his wallet and ID card were stolen from his vehicle overnight.

Smith was also wearing a fanny pack. Deputies found a driver’s license, three debit cards, and two credit cards belonging to Patrick Shanahan inside the fanny pack. Shanahan was contacted and he reported that the items were stolen from his vehicle overnight. Deputies also found a new LG cellphone in the stolen vehicle. It had been purchased at Walmart with one of Shanahan's stolen credit cards.

“We may never know why he chose Flagler County to commit his crimes but I am glad that our deputies were able to locate him and get him off our streets before he could prey on even more victims,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “We continually push the #9PMroutine on our social media sites, which is a reminder for residents to lock their doors to their vehicles and homes at night to help prevent themselves from becoming a victim. While we hope that people would not try to take things that don’t belong to them, you can help prevent crime and protect yourself by keeping your valuables secure and keeping your doors locked.”

Smith is charged with five counts of Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Credit Card, two counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Driver’s License, Grand Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card, and Driving with a Suspended License. His bond totals $41,500.

Smith is also charged with two counts of Attempted Burglary after deputies were made aware of two separate vehicle burglary attempts on Butternut Drive in Palm Coast. They were able to positively identify Smith as the suspect from video surveillance
