Family Finds Human Remains Near Volusia Mall

Daytona Beach, FL - Daytona Beach Police are investigating human remains found by a family yesterday (May 3) evening near the Cheddar's Restaurant at the Volusia Mall.

DBPD officers were dispatched to the area at about 6:43 p.m. Upon arrival, they got in contact with the mother of the family, 33-year-old Alexis Tomquist. She told officers that there was a long wait to get into the Cheddar's so she and her children went walking around in the grassy area on the southwest side of the mall, looking for frogs and turtles.

The family came across what appeared to be bones. Tomquist told officers as she looked closer, she felt sure the bones were human. The first officer on scene stated in his report that he could clearly see that it was human remains.

Other officers arrived on scene quickly to investigate and block off the search area. The Medical Examiner was notified and arrived on scene just after 8 p.m. The remains were cataloged and removed at around 8:50 p.m. Officers cleared the scene at 9:25 p.m.

There is no information on the subject's gender or identity at this time. This is a developing story.
