Edgewater, FL - An elementary school was briefly placed on lockdown this morning after shots were fired during some kind of burglary.
The Edgewater Police Department says it happened around 8 this morning at a home on the 2900 block of India Palm Drive, around a quarter-mile from Indian River Elementary School.
EPD Officer Joe Mahoney says a woman who lives at that home fired "several shots" into some bushes in her backyard.
"A witness reported observing a tall African-American male in his 20's, wearing a black shirt and black jeans, break the glass of the rear sliding glass door," Mahoney added. "The male left after entering the passenger side of a brown or dark in color newer model Chevrolet Silverado 1500 which left the area northbound."
According to Mahoney, the woman who lives there wasn't home at the time, but she came back after getting a call from a neighbor and did a sweep of the property. That's when she spotted some suspicious movement in her bushes and shrubbery.
"She fired several shots into the direction of the bushes," Mahoney stated. "No one was injured during the incident."
Mahoney noted that police think the suspect had already left by the time the woman came back home.
Indian River Elementary was locked down for around two hours as police searched for the suspect. It was lifted around 10 a.m., per Mahoney.
No other information has been released by EPD at this time, including any other information on the suspect or if anything was taken from the home.
