Edgewater Resident Holding Rally To Protest Marina Development

Posted

Edgewater, FL - Edgewater resident Libby Lavette and a group she's organized called Edgewater Environmental Alliance will hold an informational rally tomorrow. The issue is what could happen on the city's canals and at Mosquito Lagoon if City Council approves the second reading of an ordinance that would create a 44 slip marina, a 152 seat restaurant, a bait and tackle shop and a kayak rental store where the old Cameron's Marina is located.

Mayor Mike Thomas, District 1 Councilwoman Christine Power and District 3 Megan O'Keefe are in favor of the development. Newcomer District 2 Councilwoman Kimberly Yaney and District 4 Councilman Gary Conroy made their feelings known on the project by voting no.

Lavette said the development company is asking the city to basically toss out their land development codes. Work that's already been done in the area includes dredging the lagoon and tearing out the living shoreline. Lavette said that there's been a loss of seagrass in the area and manatees are having to eat the mangroves.

The Edgewater Environmental Alliance will hold an informational rally tomorrow from 10 a.m. until noon at 205 E. Boston Avenue in Edgewater. The property is adjacent to the old Cameron Marina. Lavette said there will be a free bar-b-que at No Name Saloon and Grill after the meeting.

Lavette is asking Edgewater residents that are against the development to make sure to attend the meeting on July 1 when the Edgewater City Council will hear a second reading of the ordinance.
