Edgewater, FL - The current interim City Manager of Edgewater could soon be the permanent City Manager if the contract he's offered is accepted. Glenn Irby took the interim position in February of this year, four months after the previous manager, Tracey Barlow, was fired in a surprise vote.
Edgewater Mayor Mike Thomas, who was elected after Barlow was fired, said there were a number of reasons to offer the interim position to Irby and there are more reasons to offer him the permanent position. "Mr. Irby was my first pick because of the experience. He's started his own business in lawn maintenance, then he became a police officer. He had experience in various city governments in Lake County and he was fitting right in, so he was my number one choice from the very start."
During last week's Edgewater City Council meeting, members voted 3-2 to offer Irby the permanent position. Thomas said the way he sees it, they need a permanent City Manager now. He said there is no "perfect person" and that Irby is "as close as to what he thinks the city needs."
Thomas said contract negotiations are underway with Irby and they may have a permanent City Manager after the next scheduled meeting on July 1.
