Downtown Daytona Hotel Evacuated Due To Fire

UPDATE (07-27-18): The fire is fully contained but the hotel is a total loss, according to DBFD.

Around 50 people at the hotel will have temporary shelter at First Baptist Church.

Red Cross is opening a temporary shelter at the First Baptist Church (118 N. Palmetto Ave. DB) to assist those affected by the fire. So far they have a list of approx. 50 people that will be going to the shelter. pic.twitter.com/ADo1Nzp4ig

Earlier reporting below. Daytona Beach, FL - 36 people had to be evacuated from a downtown hotel this morning after fire breaks out in the boiler room. The Daytona Beach Fire Department says it happened just before 5 o'clock at the Bayview on Orange Avenue, right next to DBFD headquarters on Beach Street. No injuries are reported and the fire was initially reported as taken care of quickly, but it flared up again just after 8 o'clock this morning, according to DBFD's Twitter page.

Thick black smoke soon billowed all over downtown heading towards beachside, causing visibility and breathing issues for at least the next two hours. It's unknown at this point how much total damage was caused to the hotel, but the damage to the boiler room was estimated at $50,000 before the flareup, according to DBFD spokesperson Sasha Staton. "Firefighters are working in extreme conditions with thick smoke and heavy flames," Staton added. "Right now, they have the fire contained to this building, so hopefully it does not spread." Daytona Beach police closed off Orange Avenue between Beach and U.S. 1 to traffic as firefighters work the scene. DBFD hasn't said at this point exactly what caused the fire.
