Florida - Independence Day ranks as one of the year’s deadliest holidays due to drunk-driving crashes, and this year could be worse than usual because AAA is anticipating record numbers of people on the road for the holiday weekend. In order to keep the roads safe, the Auto Club Group is offering free Tow to Go services to everyone.

Data from the 2014 holiday weekend, which is the most recent data available, shows that 164 people were killed in crashes where at least one driver had a blood-alcohol concentration, or BAC, of .08 or higher. According to Matt Nasworthy, Traffic Safety Consultant for AAA, that number represents 41% of the overall fatalities for that period of time. To make matters worse, AAA is anticipating a record 43 million Americans will be traveling this Independence Day Weekend.

“Driving will already be a challenge with more motorists on the road this weekend than ever before,” said Amy Stracke, Executive Director of the ACG Traffic Safety Foundation. “Celebrating safely will help keep impaired driving out of the mix.

“AAA urges everyone to have a plan in place if they’re going to be celebrating away from home. That means designating a driver, calling for an Uber or cab at the end of the night, or staying where you’re celebrating,” said Nasworthy. “If worse comes to worst, Tow to Go is there as that safety net for people that don’t prepare.”

Tow to Go is available to everyone, even if you aren’t a AAA member, from Friday, July 1st through 6 AM on Tuesday, July 5th. AAA will get you and your vehicle and take you somewhere safe within 10 miles, free of charge.

Since the program started back in 1998, Tow to Go has safely removed more than 24,000 impaired drivers from the roads all across the Southeast. To use the service, call (855) 2-TOW-2-GO, or (855) 286-9246.
