DOH-Volusia Suggests Flu Shots Before Halloween

Posted

Daytona Beach, FL - Halloween is less than a week away and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says now is the time to get a flu vaccination.

The suggestion is for everyone six months and older to get a flu vaccine by Halloween. The Department of Health in Volusia County says the cost of a basic flu vaccine is $25 and there's a high-dose vaccine for $55 available for those 65 and older.

The best time to get the shot is before it starts spreading in our community. DOH offers the vaccine at all three locations in Volusia County. It's available between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A recent report from Florida Flu Review states, "Influenza activity has increased but remains low statewide. Modest increases are expected over the coming weeks as we approach the start of the traditional influenza season."

The CDC says it takes about two weeks before the antibodies in the vaccine develop enough to fight the flu. DOH-Volusia says it's never too late to get the vaccine and offers it through the winter since seasonal flu activity usually lasts through late spring.

The flu vaccine is also available from your doctor, pharmacies and many worksites.
