UPDATE (04-11-19): Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood has confirmed that the injured deputy is OK and the suspect - 30-year-old Phillip T. Marsh - was pronounced dead after a shootout with law enforcement.

Sheriff Chitwood also said that the suspect - who had been booked at Volusia County Jail 17 times since February 2007 on a variety of charges, including most recently last December for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon - was also reported missing and suicidal before the events.

As for the deputy that was injured, Sheriff Chitwood says he's extremely lucky that he's alive.

According to Chitwood, a bullet entered through the back of the deputy's cap, bounced off of his skull and out the top of his hat.

"That's how close he came to being killed today," said Chitwood.

All officers involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the state investigation into the incident.
