Deputies: Alcohol Use A Factor In Fatal DeBary Crash

DeBary, FL - Investigators think alcohol is one of the factors behind a fatal bicycle accident in DeBary last night (January 12th).

That's the word from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office as it continues to look into the death of 60-year-old David M. Newland.

VCSO spokesperson Andrew Gant says the accident happened just before 8:30 p.m. on Charles R. Beall Boulevard at Palmira Road.

"[Newland] was traveling west on Palmira Road when he turned onto Charles R. Beall and hit the passenger side front of a northbound Ram truck," Gant added. "The driver was unable to change lanes in time to avoid impact with the bicycle."

Newland died at the scene, according to Gant.

"Alcohol use by Newland is considered to be a factor in the accident," Gant noted. "He was not wearing a helmet or reflective clothing."

No other injuries were reported, including to the driver of the Ram, who stayed at the scene and cooperated with VCSO, per Gant.

"The other driver showed no signs of impairment," Gant stated.

An autopsy is pending.
