Democrat Running For Florida Governor To Campaign At BCU

Daytona Beach, FL - One of the five Democrat candidates trying to replace Rick Scott as Florida Governor this November is making a campaign stop in Daytona Beach.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum - who's been endorsed by Vermont Senator and former Democrat presidential candidate Bernie Sanders - will appear at 1:30 tomorrow afternoon (August 22nd) at Bethune-Cookman University's Heyn Memorial Chapel.

Gillum has trailed in the polls for much of the primary campaign behind other Democrats like former Congresswoman Gwen Graham, former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine and South Florida billionaire Jeff Greene, but his campaign has seen some forward momentum after getting Sanders' endorsement.

Gillum is also endorsed by progressive groups like the Dream Defenders, NextGen American and People for the American Way.

Despite that, he remains in the single digits along with Orlando businessman Chris King, according to the latest poll from St. Leo University. Graham leads at 27%, followed by Levine at 19% and Greene at 12%.

Gillum is tied with Greene for 3rd place at 11% in another poll released yesterday by Florida Atlantic University.

The St. Leo poll does show 26% of registered Democrats surveyed remain undecided on who to vote for. Gillum is spending the final week before the August 28th primary on a statewide bus tour in the hopes of wooing those voters.

One of the cornerstones of his campaign is the dismantlement of the state's controversial 'Stand Your Ground' law.

Gillum is the only African-American candidate in the gubernatorial field for either major political party and also the only one who's not a millionaire or a billionaire. If he wins the Democrat nomination next Tuesday, he'll be the first black candidate ever to do that for a major political party in Florida.
