Orange City, FL - Charges could soon be filed against a DeBary man following an accident where a Deltona woman was hit and dragged by the sport utility vehicle he was driving.

The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened around 12:30 yesterday afternoon at the parking lot of Bravo Supermarket on 2413 Enterprise Road in Orange City, close to the South Volusia Avenue intersection.

52-year-old Petra Marrero remains in critical condition as of this morning after she was airlifted from the scene to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, according to an FHP press release.

Troopers say 73-year-old Angel Rios Ruiz was behind the wheel of a 2003 Lincoln Navigator when it hit Marrero, five other parked vehicles nearby and several shopping carts.

According to the accident report, Ruiz had just put his groceries away when he got in the driver's seat and tried to move forward, but he had accidentally put the gear shifter in reverse, striking the vehicle behind him.

At that point, Ruiz put the SUV in drive and hit the other four vehicles, the shopping carts and Marrero before coming to a stop.

Ruiz - who was not hurt - was wearing a seat belt and did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident, per FHP.
