Sanford, FL - Florida Highway Patrol Lieutenant Kim Montes is reporting that a 48-year-old Deltona man is dead after a fatal traffic accident on S.R. 46 in Sanford early this morning. A male passenger in his car suffered critical injuries. Neither of them is being identified at this time, pending next of kin notification.

Montes said that the driver was traveling eastbound on S.R. 46 just before 6 a.m. He was passing other traffic in the eastbound lanes in a no-passing zone as a pickup truck driven by 37-year-old Meryck Foster of Lake Helen was traveling westbound. Foster swerved to the left to avoid the eastbound vehicle just as it was moving back into the eastbound lane. The front of his vehicle hit Foster's vehicle head-on, then caught fire.

Neither the unidentified driver nor his passenger was wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Foster was wearing his seatbelt but suffered serious injury. Both he and the unidentified passenger were taken to Central Florida Regional for treatment.

FHP says the crash remains under investigation.
