Deltona, FL – A lightning strike at a Deltona gas station sends first responders and HAZMAT units to the scene after the bolt ruptured an underground gasoline tank.
Members of Volusia County's Sheriff's Office and Fire Services, along with the Deltona Fire Department, were called to the scene just before 8 o'clock Tuesday night (August 21st) at the Circle K station on the corner of Catalina and Howland boulevards.
Officials with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection were also called to the scene to investigate and assess any environmental impacts.
According to a VCSO event report, none of the people in the area at the time suffered any injuries and there was no fire caused by the bolt, even though smoke was reported initially from a witness who called 911.

A photo taken by VCSO (seen above) shows the bolt led to an explosion which created a hole at least 15 feet long and 15 feet wide, spreading debris as far as the Winn-Dixie on the east side of Howland.
The gas station remains closed for now as repair work begins.
