DeLand, Fl - The city of DeLand is set to hold its annual tree giveaway to celebrate Earth Day.

The giveaway is sponsored in part by the DeLand Breakfast Rotary and will be from 8 to 11 AM on Saturday, April 16 at the city's Public Works facility at 1102 S. Garfield Ave.

"We've been doing this for more than 20 years now," said Mariellen Calabro, Forester for the City of DeLand. According to Callabro, they usually have "around 300 cars roll through" and the city usually gives away "about 1,000 to 1,500" trees. The city is hoping to break 2,000 this year.

Each resident will be able to take up to 3 trees. Species available this year include American Elm, Bald Cypress, Blue Beech, Dahoon Holly, Live Oak, Loquat, Post Oak, Red Maple, Shumard Oak, Sweetgum, Wild Olive, Winged Elm, Yaupon Holly and Yellow Poplar. Quantities are limited and are subject to change.

The giveaway is only for DeLand residents and proof is required. If you are picking up trees for someone else you must bring a written request and a copy of that person's proof of residence. No advance reservations will be taken.

A giveaway form, which can be found here, must be completed and brought to the event.
