Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Beach Police Department will again be conducting High Visibility Enforcement Details after receiving a $34,000 grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. Public Information Officer said they also received a $5,000 bonus due to their previous success.
DBPD received an award form FDOT in July for superior work and results in an operation aimed at improving traffic safety in the city from March 17 to May 17. Bendayan said officers issued over 430 warnings, gave out 130 sets of bicycle lights, handed out over 30 citations and made 10 misdemeanor arrests during those two months.
The upcoming High Visibility Enforcement Detail is expected to begin sometime next week. Additional streets have been added to the areas covered earlier this year. In addition to parts of Nova Road, International Speedway Boulevard and Ridgewood Avenue, the detail will also include portions of Clyde Morris Boulevard, Mason Avenue and A-1-A. The reason these areas were chosen is that about 80 percent of the accidents in Daytona Beach takes place on those streets.
The goal continues to be to increase awareness of, and compliance with, traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists. Enforcement efforts will focus primarily on education to drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. It will also include the issuance of citations and warnings depending on the circumstances.
