Daytona Regional Chamber Address County Panhandling Ordinance

Daytona Beach, FL- The Volusia County Council is expected to vote Tuesday on a measure similar to one passed by the city of Daytona Beach last month. Daytona Beach put a law into effect that allows for the arrest of people trespassing on public property. Jim Cameron, Senior Vice President of the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce, said that his organization has been canvassing local businesses for their opinion on a panhandling ordinance. The Chamber is working with the same attorney, Michael Kahn, used by the city of Daytona Beach, to give him input from local businesses. Cameron said that the Chamber has heard complaints from local businesses about the number of panhandlers in Volusia County and particularly in Daytona Beach. In turn, Cameron says the businesses are getting complaints from their customers about panhandlers. The Chamber is very much concerned about keeping a healthy economy for local businesses. Cameron said that he feels the amendment to the current beach code will be fair, balancing the rights of those that choose to panhandle and the rights of local business owners.
