Daytona Company Gets Contract To Fill 17/92 Sinkhole

DeBary, FL - The Florida Department of Transportation has hired a Daytona Beach company to do emergency repairs on the sinkhole which formed Friday on U.S. 17/92 in DeBary.

P&S Paving of Daytona Beach will be paid around $594,000 to "repair, rebuild and reopen" northbound 17/92 near Hollow Pine Drive, according to a statement released today by FDOT.

FDOT spokesperson Steve Olson says the emergency contract awarded to P&S Paving was the lowest of the four bids given to the agency over the weekend for the repair work.

"The work includes underground grouting to stabilize a depression that formed along the roadway last week as well as reconstructing the roadway," Olson added.

The highest bid was $1.9 million from Hubbard Construction with a 30-day timeline. Ranger Construction offered to do it in 20 days for $892,740, while Massey General Contracting bid $1.3 million to get it done in 45 days.

Work is expected to begin sometime this week. In the meantime, all northbound lanes in that stretch of 17/92 will remain closed until the project is finished, per Olson.

"Drivers heading northbound need to factor in extra time and exercise patience," Olson noted. "The northbound detour for through-traffic is eastbound Highbanks Road, to northbound Enterprise Road, to westbound Saxon Boulevard and then back to northbound 17/92."

No exact timeline has been given by FDOT, but the contract does note that P&S has 21 days from the time work begins to get everything done.

The sinkhole became visible on Friday, causing deep cracks in the right-hand lane. A water main under the road then broke after initial repairs were done due to lack of dirt underneath the pipe, per Olson. That caused the sinkhole to grow up to 60 feet wide and around 20 feet deep before it was filled over the weekend with dirt.
