daytona-beach-police-car Daytona Beach, FL-Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood announced this morning he's running for county sheriff.  Chitwood was joined for the announcement by supporters at the Yvonne Scarlett-Golden Cultural Center in Daytona Beach. Chitwood noted in his remarks that Scarlett-Golden, the first African-American mayor in the city, hired him as chief.  She died in 2006. Chitwood talked about implementing what he called "VCSO 2.0" and building on the advances made under Sheriff Ben Johnson who will retire at the end of this term. Chitwood says he changed his mind about making a run for office at the urging of the public when he was directing traffic at the Daytona 500. Chitwood says he lost count of the race fans who urged him to run at that event. Chitwood also credited his change of heart to staff members at DBPD who encouraged him to run.
