Daytona Beach City Commission To Tackle Homeless Shelter Options

Daytona Beach, FL-When the Daytona Beach City Commission meets tonight, city leaders will take on the issue of how to address the homeless here with two possibilities under consideration. The discussion will center around opening a temporary shelter at the long-empty and city-owned Armed Forces Reserve Center near Beach Street and acting on a long-term shelter plan which, on the agenda, is called "First Step Shelter". The need for a temporary shelter is immediate as the Salvation Army on Ballough Road is set to shut down the additional beds it added as an emergency measure when dozens of homeless camped out for days outside the county government building on Beach Street. Those additional beds will be gone July 26. City leaders see the Armed Forces Reserve Center building as a way to bridge a gap of about nine months until a long-term solution is ready. The "First Step" shelter, if approved, would go on 5 acres of city-owned land off US 92 near Red John Lake Drive. The first board members for the "First Step" project are listed on the meeting agenda as City Commissioner Pam Woods, Holly Hill City Manager Joe Forte and Daytona Beach Community Relations Manager Dr. L. Ronald Durham. The City Commission meets tonight at 6pm. Tonight's meeting agenda can be seen here.
