Daytona Beach, FL - At its Wednesday night meeting, the Daytona Beach City Commission unanimously approved a measure to allow 3.7 acres of land on the east side of the Volusia Mall to be redeveloped as a new restaurant and retail district. The site for the development is currently the site of the Sears Auto Center, which is proposed to be demolished. The new development would be located east of Bill France Blvd., off of International Speedway Blvd. Bonefish Grill and Metro Diner are two proposed tenants for the development. "I think we're all just excited about the project and the continued evolution of our mall," said Mayor Derrick Henry. "Many of us grew up with the mall as an important part of our lives, and to see it evolve and continue to be competitive and continue to thrive is a thing of beauty, and we are all excited about the new restaurants as well." CBL Properties owns the Volusia Mall. Rob Merrell, an attorney working with the development project at the Volusia Mall, said that CBL owns The Pavilion outdoor shopping center in Port Orange as well. Merrell explained that the new development at the Volusia Mall will be similar to The Pavilion. According to City records, there are spots for a total of six businesses and a service court in the plans for the new Volusia Mall development.
