Ormond Beach and DeBary, FL - The county will be collecting hazardous waste this week, free of charge.

Volusia County's Solid Waste Division will be holding free household hazardous material collection events on April 1 and 2.

Residents can drop off old paint, solvents, batteries (including car batteries), pool chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, gas, and other household chemicals. Up to 10 fluorescent lamps can also be brought. Only unmixed household hazardous waste will be accepted. According to Pat Kuehn, Community Information Specialist for Volusia County, "businesses will not be eligible for the free disposal."

On Friday, April 1, the collection will be held at Ormond Beach Public Works, 501 N. Orchard St., from 9 AM to 3 PM. On Saturday, April 2, waste will be collected at DeBary City Hall, 16 Columba Rd., from 9 AM to 3 PM.

Kuehn wants residents to know that "they can drop off their household hazardous waste at the Tomoka Landfill or the West Volusia Transfer Station anytime, year round, without a charge." The landfill is in Port Orange and is open from 7 AM to 5:30 PM Monday through Saturday. The transfer station in DeLand is open from 7 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday and from 8 AM to 3 PM on Saturdays. Both facilities provide free paint exchange programs and electronic waste recycling.
