Daytona Beach, FL – In College Choice’s 2018 rankings of the best Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the nation, Daytona Beach’s Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) claimed the #33 spot.

College Choice focused on each school’s opportunity, equity, retention rates, scholarships, financial assistance, affordability, and leadership when choosing the rankings. Data from each school’s website, PayScale, US News & World Report, and The National Center for Education Statistics was analyzed to formulate the rankings.

B-CU is a private research and liberal arts university with more than 4,000 students currently enrolled. B-CU offers more than 40 undergraduate and graduate programs through a dozen schools and colleges. College Choice points out that B-CU is one of only a few HBCUs on the list that was founded by a woman. Mary McLeod Bethune started the school with just five girls back in 1904.

College Choice also points out the notable features of the school such as the Center for Undergraduate Research Excellence (CURE), The Harrison Rhodes Memorial Library, and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (CEED). B-CU’s campus is also listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The school is widely known for its research, engineering programs, and its band, the Marching Wildcats, which features more than 300 students.

College Choice also ranked the following Florida HBCUs:

  • #5 - Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) in Tallahassee, FL
  • #23 – Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens, FL
  • #49 – Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL
