City Of DeLand Urges Citizens To Be Aware Of Sick Raccoons

Posted

DeLand, FL - The City of DeLand is warning residents to be aware of sick raccoons since at least seven raccoons in the DeLand area have shown signs of distemper in the past week. Distemper is a virus that can be deadly to unvaccinated pets. DeLand City officials say raccoons are susceptible to both canine and feline distemper. Other parts of Volusia County have seen an increase in sick raccoons as well. The City of DeLand is asking residents to take precautions due to the reports of sick raccoons. Pet food should not be left outside since it can attract unwanted attention. Raccoons infected with distemper may move slowly, stumble, or appear confused. Those animals can become aggressive and may lose their fear of humans. Anyone who notices a raccoon behaving abnormally should avoid contact with the animal. Residents are asked to report sick raccoons to Volusia County Dispatch at 386-736-5999. Copyright Southern Stone Communications 2018.
