Historically African-American DeLand American Legion Post To Get Cash For Repairs

american legion DeLand, FL-Damaged by hurricanes in 2004, the reconstruction of the American Legion Orange Baker Post #187 in DeLand is about to get a much-needed boost with money for repairs. The historically African-American post will be the site of a check presentation Monday. DeLand spokesperson Chris Graham said the fundraising began about a year ago and Commander Charles Williams has done a lot of hard work. The structure has been recognized by the city as a historic building. A ceremony celebrating planned renovations is scheduled for 10 A.M. on Monday, May 2. During the event, members of the Orange Baker Post will be presented with a check for about $100,000. The ceremony will be held outside the facility at 415 W. Voorhis Ave. Local and state leaders including State Senator Dorothy Hukill and Representative Dwayne Taylor are expected to speak at the event. The Orange Baker Post was first established in 1948 for black servicemen and named in honor of local citizen Orange Baker. Orange Baker Check Presentation
