Volusia County, FL - Volusia County's getting ready to swear in its next Sheriff, and prior to the ceremony the Sheriff-Elect sat in with the Daytona's Morning News crew to talk about the election, his time at the Daytona Beach Police Department, and his new role at the Sheriff's Office.
While speaking with WNDB's Al Smith, Sheriff-Elect Mike Chitwood had this to say about his time at the Daytona Beach Police Department: "I loved every minute of being the Police Chief in Daytona Beach. It was the greatest job I ever had. This was the greatest community I've ever worked in."
Chitwood said he was humbled and honored to be asked to run for sheriff. In preparation for his new role he's been interviewing staff at the Sheriff's Office, and nearly all the deputies shared 3 common concerns: pay, the disconnect between leadership/patrol, and a lack of community engagement. Chitwood plans to focus on these issues during his time as sheriff.
He also wants to focus on reducing the number of police shootings involving mentally ill people and unarmed people.
Chitwood's scheduled to be sworn in at 11 AM on Tuesday, January 3, at the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center in Daytona Beach. The ceremony's free and open to the public, but you do need a ticket to get in. Doors open at 9:30 AM.
