Daytona Beach, FL - Charges are pending after a 55-year-old New Smyrna Beach man died in an accident where two vehicles crashed into each other in Daytona Beach.

Joseph Irrera died soon after paramedics took him to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach following the early Sunday morning (October 7th) crash on U.S. 1/South Ridgewood Avenue near Magnolia Avenue.

According to the accident report, Irrera was heading south on U.S. 1 in a Dodge passenger van around 2 a.m. when a Mazda sport utility vehicle in the left lane tried to merge into the inside lane where the van was at.

The Daytona Beach Police Department believes the right front side of the Mazda - driven by 19-year-old Jatyler Gary of Crestview - hit the left front side of the van, putting the Mazda into a counterclockwise spin before it flipped over and sending the Dodge into a concrete utility pole.

Other passengers in the Mazda had minor injuries, per the DBPD report. It's not clear who they are or if they got treated at the scene.
