Changes Coming To Port Orange Gymnasium

Port Orange, FL - The city of Port Orange is in the planning stages to refurbish and renovate the Gymnasium at City Circle. At the regular City Council meeting earlier this week, the Council approved the acceptance of an ECHO grant of $400,000, to be used for the planned changes at the Gymnasium. The city was required to have matching funds in order to qualify for the grant. The City Council has committed $516,601 to the project.

City Grants Manager, Amanda Lasecki, said one of the first steps is to hire a company to coordinate community meetings. She said that city residents are encouraged to let the city know how they think the Gymnasium should be changed and what things need to be added.

Lasecki said that Parks and Recreation offices located in the Gymnasium will be repurposed as cultural classrooms. She said that some of the classes in the plans include painting and photography, ceramics, music and drama programs. The classes will be for children as well as adults.

The renovations are expected to get underway in the summer of 2020, according to Lasecki. She suggests checking the Port Orange Parks & Rec social media pages for updates on the community meetings and on when the work will get started.
