Carjacking & Kidnapping Chase Ends In Crash

South Daytona, FL - A chase between law enforcement and a suspect wanted for kidnapping and carjacking ends in a crash involving three children.

South Daytona police alerted all local departments around 5:30 yesterday evening (September 10th) when 26-year-old Ervin Sims allegedly stole a van with his girlfriend's children inside, all three aged around one year old.

They say Sims and his girlfriend got into an argument, then he pushed her out of the van and took off with the children. An alert was then put out for Sims.

According to Captain Mark Cheatham with the South Daytona Police Department, contact was made between Sims and his girlfriend via Facebook. He said that he would return and bring back the children as long as there was no police. They chose to meet at the Taco Bell she was originally left at.

As he was on his way, police noticed the vehicle and began to follow him. As he entered the parking lot he noticed officers behind him and fled again, north into Daytona Beach.

Later that night, the chase ended when Sims was hit by another car on Derbyshire Road and Brentwood Drive in Daytona Beach. According to Cheatham, two children were also inside the car that hit him and it's possible a second vehicle was involved.

South Daytona police were able to retrieve the children from Sim's vehicle after he fled the scene and bring them to Halifax Health Medical Center. Per Cheatham, as of this morning, their conditions are stable.

Daytona Beach police were not involved in the chase, but they helped with the perimeter search for Sims, who is still at large.

Anyone with information regarding Sims is urged to call 911.
