Ormond Beach, FL - A 54-year-old man was taken down by bystanders as he came out of the Ormond Beach convenience store he just robbed. Volusia County Sheriff's deputies say Anthony Robertson, wearing a mask and latex gloves, entered the Jiffy Food Store just before 7 p.m. They say he displayed an apparent weapon and demanded "the money, give me the money." The clerk gave him an undisclosed amount. Robertson went out the door and found the bystanders waiting for him.

Deputies say two men saw what happened. One knocked him to the ground. The other beat him in the head and held him until deputies and Ormond Beach police arrived. Paramedics treated Robertson at the scene and he was transported to the hospital where he was admitted for treatment of his head injuries.

Robertson told deputies that he frequents the store on Nova Road and knew that they closed at 7 p.m. During an interview, deputies found that the would-be weapon turned out to be a plastic kite string handle covered with a rag, intended to appear as a concealed firearm.

Even though the weapon was not real, Robertson faces charges of robbery with a firearm/deadly weapon, assault with intent to commit a felony, false imprisonment, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill. Bond is set at $35,000.
