Busy Weekend For Volusia County Beach Safety

Daytona Beach, FL- Members of Volusia County Beach Safety rescued 116 people over the weekend.  VCBS Captain Mike Berard said his lifeguards rescued 72 people on Sunday. With the wind conditions not changing, the risk of hazardous rip currents is expected to continue through the coming week. A 43-year-old Orlando man was surfing at around 10:25 a.m. in the 2100 block North in New Smyrna Beach. Beach goers reported that the man seemed to be struggling and then going under.  An off duty Volusia County lifeguard was surfing nearby, noticed the man and pulled him to shore and began CPR. Beach Safety staff and New Smyrna Beach Fire and Rescue maintained medical intervention until the man was transported to the hospital.  The man was last reported in critical condition in the ICU.  It's not clear what caused the man's struggle.
