Daytona Beach, FL - The brother of a local pro basketball star sits in a jail cell over a week after police say he tried to punch his live-in girlfriend and run her over with his pick-up truck.

38-year-old Christopher A. Carter is held without bond on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at Volusia County Jail following his booking on Saturday (August 11th).

It all started when Carter's 27-year-old girlfriend called 911 for help from the Checkers restaurant on the corner of West International Speedway and South Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards around 12:20 a.m. on August 3rd.

According to the Daytona Beach Police Department incident report, the woman told responding officers that Carter got upset after she complained about him being "high on cocaine" while both of them were in his white 2008 Dodge Dakota in the parking lot of the Ahyan Food Mart on South MLK.

When interviewed afterward, the woman told DBPD that she got upset because Carter has a tendency to get "violent" while on the drug, per the report.

Officers say security video from the food mart shows Carter driving the truck towards the woman after she got out through the passenger side and crossed in front of the truck, causing her to place her hand on the hood as she moved out of the way. The report also shows her telling DBPD that Carter had knocked a drink out of her hand during the argument, prompting her to get out of the truck just before he allegedly tried to run her over.

Detectives mentioned that the security video also shows Carter getting out of the truck after his girlfriend moved out of its way, grabbing her and raising his fist to hit her. That's when she managed to break free and run to the Checkers.

The woman told an emergency dispatcher that she's had incidents like this with Carter in the past and that he's told her before that he would change for the sake of their unborn child, according to the report. She also mentioned during the call that she's four months pregnant.

VCJ records show Carter has been booked there at least 26 times since July 2001, including this past February on charges of aggravated battery and domestic battery by strangulation.

Carter is the younger brother of Vince Carter, who starred at Daytona Beach's Mainland High School and at the college level for the University of North Carolina before embarking on an over 20-year career in the National Basketball Association. The 41-year-old recently signed a new contract with the Atlanta Hawks.
