South Daytona, FL - Public safety seminars on how to deal with an active shooter and self-defense are being offered in April.

The city of South Daytona is offering two public safety seminars in April.

On Saturday, April 2 from 9 to 11 AM, a seminar on self-defense will be offered. In this seminar, attendees will learn "offensive and defensive tactics for street survival with hands-on practice." Admission costs $10 for adults 15 and older, and $5 for kids 14 and younger. Call instructor Bill Robinson at 386-846-9151 for more information.

The second seminar will be held on Saturday, April 9 from 10 AM to noon. This seminar will focus on what you can do when confronted with an active shooter and how to respond when law enforcement arrives. Lt. Mark Cheatham from the South Daytona Police Department and Capt. Lance Blanchette from the Daytona Beach Police Department will be the instructors. Admission is free. Call 386-322-3030 to reserve a space.

According to Lt. Cheatham, the goal of the April 9th seminar is to teach the public what to do if "the situation gets extremely bad."  The goal of these seminars isn't to scare people, but to make them more aware. Material will be covered that can be applied to similar situations anywhere in the world.

Both seminars will be held at Piggotte Community Center at 504 Big Tree Road.
