DeLand, FL - A 9th-grade student at DeLand High School was arrested on Thursday morning after a gun, which he had stolen from his grandfather, was found in his backpack.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the 15-year-old had stolen the gun and some money from his grandfather's safe. The boy didn't threaten anyone with the Glock 19, semi-automatic pistol, and he told the arresting deputy that he was planning on giving it to a friend.

When the school resource deputy searched the student's backpack he found the stolen cash and the gun, which had a magazine in it. A 2nd magazine was also found in the backpack - both magazines were loaded with bullets.

The student said he was planning on giving the gun to an adult he knew and he had no intention of using it to hurt anyone. The grandfather opted not to press charges for theft so VCSO arrested the student for possession of a firearm on school property. He was brought to the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Daytona Beach.
