6 Marijuana Packages Wash Ashore In Flagler Beach

Flagler Beach, FL - Federal officials are now investigating after more plastic-wrapped packages filled with marijuana wash ashore, this time in Flagler County.

The Flagler Beach Police Department took possession of six "bricks" (pictured above) yesterday September 12th), the same day Volusia County Beach Safety found 23 similar packages near Al Weeks Sr. North Shore Park in Ormond By The Sea.

According to the incident report, a sergeant with FBPD found the drugs just before 11 a.m. near the intersection of 6th Street North and North Ocean Shore Boulevard/State Road A1A.

FBPD says people in the area called for help after spotting a large package in the surf and opening it, finding the six packages inside.

The officer noted a "strong smell" when looking into the package, which was "saturated" with salt water, per the report.

The marijuana packages were sealed in large trash bags soon after arrival at FBPD headquarters and were initially going to be destroyed by evidence technicians, but they are now awaiting pickup by the United States Customs and Border Patrol. That's expected to happen at some point today.

Per the incident report, a lieutenant of the U.S. Coast Guard contacted the FBPD sergeant who responded to the scene soon after the marijuana was discovered wanting to get more information about the packages.

That same sergeant fielded a call later in the day from an agent with USCBP, who told him that the USCG told them about the packages and they wanted to take those packages into their custody to see if its origin could be traced.
