250-Acre Brush Fire In DeLand Shuts Down SR-44 Overnight

DeLand, FL4/28/17 10 AM Update: The 250 acre Damascus Rd wildfire is 75% contained and State Road 44 has been reopened.

Firefighters will be on scene Friday working the active wildfire so expect equipment and fire vehicles in the area.

As a reminder, FL law requires drivers to move over a lane, if they can safely do so, for stopped law enforcement, emergency, sanitation, and utility vehicles as well as tow trucks and wrecks. If you can't move over, or if you're on a 2 lane road, slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit.

Earlier Reporting:

A 250-acre brush fire forced crews to close a stretch of State Road 44 overnight on Thursday.

At last check, the fire was 75% contained. The fire began at 1:40 PM at 199 Damascus Rd on the south side of SR-44. Both lanes of SR-44 were closed from Prevatt Rd to Pioneer Trl through the night and will remain closed until at least 7:30 AM on Friday.

On Thursday night, officials said no structures were endangered and no evacuations had been ordered. FHP's keeping an eye on smoke conditions on I-4, which remains opened.
