Deltona, FL - A 16-year-old Sanford boy was arrested after deputies say he carjacked a 76-year-old Deltona man at gunpoint in front of the victim's home. According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VCSO), detectives responded to the victim's home on Star Court in Deltona at 3:04 PM Saturday, where the victim reported that an armed suspect carjacked his 2016 red Corvette. The victim was coming home from a Hospice thrift store in Orange City, and VCSO says the 16-year-old followed the 76-year-old, pointed a gun at the victim's head, and demanded the keys to the car. "We're pretty sure that the sporty Corvette attracted attention," says Laura Williams, Public Information Officer for VCSO. Deputies later found the abandoned Corvette at Enterprise Cove apartment complex in Orange City. The vehicle was found with the use of the On-Star in-vehicle security system and the Sheriff’s Air 1 helicopter. Investigators were able to track down the suspect with the help of video surveillance and fingerprints found on the Corvette. The suspect was interviewed Tuesday afternoon in Sanford and taken into custody at the juvenile detention center in Sanford with no bail allowed, VCSO says. The boy is expected to be extradited to Volusia County. “This could have turned tragic. A young thug points a gun at a 76-year-old man and steals his car from his driveway,” says Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “We made this a priority due to the severity of the crime.” For earlier reporting on this story, click here.
