Daytona Beach, FL – Things are looking busy in the Atlantic now that the National Hurricane Center is monitoring three different systems.
The first that popped up on the radar was Tropical Storm Jerry, which is currently moving toward the north-northwest near 7 mph.
A turn to the north is expected tonight followed by a turn to the northeast tomorrow. On the forecast track, the center of Jerry is expected to pass near Bermuda by tomorrow night.
That storm is already well out of Florida’s reach, with the only impact being higher waves in the Atlantic.
But, while Jerry is out of the way and headed north, one storm could have Florida in its sights later this week.
Yesterday, the National Hurricane Center announced the development of Tropical Storm Karen, which formed south of Puerto Rico and north of Venezuela.
Originally, initial tracks had Karen moving north and further into the Atlantic. But now the 5 a.m. advisory from the NHC shows that Karen could make a turn towards the west later in the week, closer to Thursday and Friday.
If Karen were to make that turn, a Florida impact could be possible, if the storm were to continue on that path west without another turn. It’s still too early to predict an impact, as the forecast track could change at any time.
The other system that the NHC has their eye on is Tropical Depression 13, which is still off the western coast of Africa. Further development is expected with TD 13, meaning that the storm could become Tropical Storm Lorenzo as early as today or tomorrow.
The current models show that forecasters are expecting TD 13 to move west-northwest before making a turn towards the north as it moves over open waters, which could help the system strengthen into a hurricane by Wednesday.
As stated before, it’s still too early to predict any kind of Florida impact with Karen or TD 13, but updates will be passed along as needed.
