DeLand, FL - Volusia County students will be distance learning through the end of the school year, due to COVID-19. If the Stay at Home Order is lifted, will there be summer school?
Volusia United Educators President Elizabeth Albert will be speaking with Volusia Schools Superintendent Dr, Scott Fritz later this week and summer school is one item on the agenda.
Albert said she feels that if we can have summer school, we should do so, as long as it’s safe. "I believe it should be a robust summer school. I think if it's safe and we can take advantage of an additional opportunity to provide face-to-face instruction to students, then we need to jump on it." She feels summer school will help students make up time lost during distance learning. "I think it will be one way that we will be able to make up some of this time. Typically, we run summer school in July so there's still a significant amount of time between now and then."
Albert also said she’d like to see something done for graduating seniors since they are missing out on a rite of passage. "We definitely need to do something for our seniors. I mean, it's such a right of passage. It's very significant so to not be able to participate in that is definitely is sad for them. So we definitely need to do something for our seniors. It's such a big, big deal."
Albert and Dr. Fritz will meet Wednesday afternoon.
