DeLand, FL - Governor Ron DeSantis is talking about funding to raise the minimum salary for starting teachers to $47,500 annually. The problem, according to Volusia United Educators President Elizabeth Albert, is that the Governor's plan is short-sighted. "What about teachers who have tenure and might already be at the suggested minimum. What kind of compensation will they get?" The governor wants to bring the state's ranking up to number five for teachers starting salaries. Albert said, "If the increase does not include veteran teachers, it will create a hemorrhage of teachers from the state of Florida."
Albert said that teachers across the state are planning a Fund Our Future rally in Tallahassee on January 13, which is a Monday and not a scheduled day off. When asked about how that will be handled, she said new Volusia Schools Superintendent Dr. Ronald "Scott" Fritz, who she says is a strong advocate for education professionals, is helping the teachers union work on how things will be covered so that it does not affect student education. Albert said that yesterday (December 2) was Dr. Fritz's first day and that he has "hit the ground running." She said that she has no doubt that Dr. Fritz is going to do a great job for Volusia County Schools.
The rally is scheduled for the Monday before the 2020 legislative session and Albert says anyone who values public education is invited to get on the bus and ride to Tallahassee. She said the intent of the rally is to advocate for the resources and support that students need to be successful.
