DeLand, FL - Volusia County School Board members will meet for the first time in 2021 tomorrow (January 12). A resolution creating a Volusia County School District Police Department, announced last week, is on the agenda. District 5 School Board member Ruben Colon says the agenda item may get pulled for further discussion. "This is a decision that the Board will have to figure out if it's in the best interest of our students and our community. However, this will be the first time we will be discussing this topic."

Also on the agenda is the Board's approval of the agreement between Volusia County Schools and Volusia United Educators regarding the Teacher Salary Allocation. That agreement was reached on the last day before the winter break after more than two months of negotiation.

Colon says they'll ratify the contract with the teachers and it will increase the starting pay of those making less than the base salary and give all teachers a minimum of a 2.5% salary increase, retroactive to July 2020.  The increase will go through a few more steps before teachers see the money, due to the way the state worked the legislation "It's very prescribed in how you're going to spend the money and so we're going to send it up to the state at which point then they have to approve it and then they release the money. So we don't even have the money."

Tomorrow's (January 12) meeting begins at 3:30 p.m.
