DeLand, FL - There will be summer school for Volusia County School District students divided into two sessions. The School Board made that decision last week during their meeting.
There will be virtual sessions, the first is from June 8 through June 30. Courses offered are Second Grade Reading Camp, Third Grade Reading Camp, both Elementary Courses. There's also a class for students with disabilities, They'll identify the students who received extra support and offer the opportunity to them.
Volusia United Educators President Elizabeth Albert says there's also something for middle and high school students. "In secondary schools, they're going to offer an Online Credit Retrieval process to any student who earned an 'F' in a core course and who did not earn credit in that course." This course ends on July 2.
The second session runs from July 6 through July 30. It includes a virtual session offering Elementary and Secondary courses. Albert said, " They're going to target students for ELA and math, identified students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. They're also going to offer extended school year services for identified students with disabilities." Secondary courses for students in 6th through 11th grade include ELA, math, and the extended school year services. Albert said that the Online Credit Retrieval process will also be available.
There is a traditional brick and mortar portion in the second session that Albert says is only for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. "Based on the situation, they want to open up a brick and mortar offering but only in the state and district-identified Focus Schools."
