DeLand, FL - Volusia County Council members made some significant decisions during their meeting today, including making interim county attorney Mike Dyer permanent.

Council accepted ballot language for ECHO and Volusia Forever. Both programs will be on the November 3 ballot. A number of people, including U. S. Representative Michael Waltz and State Representative Tom Wright,  spoke on the Commercial Space Industry Opportunity Overlay District.

Council District Three Representative Deb Denys said that the Overlay is about opportunity. "It's about economic development and it's about jobs here in the supply chain. It's market-driven. It's not government-driven. We're just lighting the path for opportunity."

Denys also let environmentalists know what the Overlay will not do.  "They don't encourage the paving over and the destruction of our environmentally sensitive wetlands. They don't weaken environmental protections. The amendments also don't open up the county to wide-spread and indiscriminate new development."

Council voted unanimously to adopt the amendment to the Comprehensive Plan Future Land Use creating the Commercial Space Industry Opportunity Overlay.
