DeLand, FL - Volusia County Council members are now updated with the latest information on the COVID-19 pandemic from the financial needs of the Clerk of the Court to how COVID-19 is affecting hurricane preparations to ways to slow the recent outbreak.
Public Protection Director Joe Pozzo told Council that he, his staff, and Community Services are in the process of creating 50,000 'Coronavirus care packages' for those in need. He expects them to be ready for distribution before the end of July. "Masks, isolation masks, some antibacterial hand soap, and some surface cleaner. CDC directions on masks and reduce the community spreading of coronavirus. We'll do that in Spanish and in English."
With the increased number of positive cases, the average age of those who have has decreased. Dr. Randa Matusiak, Special Projects Coordinator, Volusia County Public Protection, said we've seen a marked increase in cases per day. "The median age is 43, previously it had been in that age range category of 45 to 54, even inching into that 55 to 64 range. In the past couple of weeks, the median age for cases confirmed each day has really been in the 30s, so it's a younger crowd that's testing positive."
Council heard from Kevin Captain on the subject of the "Step Up Volusia' campaign and discussed ways to get information to the communities, especially testing sites. You can find the latest on testing site locations by visiting volusia.org.
More testing is scheduled for next week. Family Health Source is offering free drive-thru nasal swab testing for all ages between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. July 6, 7, 9, and 10 at the Volusia County Fair Grounds.
