VCAS Free Drive-thru Microchip & Pet Food Event

Posted

Daytona Beach, FL - Volusia County Animal Services will be microchipping pets for free and giving away free pet food on Saturday, June 6. The event begins at 9 a.m. or while supplies last.

VCAS Director Adam Leath says they are excited to offer resources to the public.  He said they really strive to not only provide pet resources but to understand that pet owners need those resources. "We don't want people to have to choose between buying food for their pet and buying food for themselves or their family. So we want to make sure in our partnership with the ASPCA, we want to provide those resources directly to the public."

Leath said the event is totally drive-thru. "Stay in your vehicle, you don't even need to get out, drive straight through and we'll provide it to you."

The event is while supplies last so you should get there as early as you can. Leath says they have nine pallets of both dog and cat food so he expects to run out of that. He does not expect to run out of microchips and now that it's hurricane season, what better time to make sure your pet has a free call home. "They don't have thumbs but with a microchip, they can call. So if you ever lose your pet, we're coming into hurricane season, anytime you would lose track of them, they don't need to call because we scan for the microchip and bring the pet right back to you."

Volusia County Animal Services is located at 1250 Indian Lake Road, right next to the Emergency Operations Center.  If you're going, you're encouraged to wear a face-covering. If you don't have one, they will provide you and one and will even give you some to take home. Leath said they want to make sure people have access to the resources and they want pets and pet owners to be safe.

Leath says the microchips are available for all small pets. To keep them safe, you're asked to properly restrain your pet. Dogs can be in a crate or on a leash.  Cats and other animals like ferrets, rabbits, and guinea pigs need to be in a crate.
