Two Free Hazardous Materials Collection Events This Weekend

Posted

DeLand, FL - Volusia County's Solid Waste Division is hosting two household hazardous materials collection events this weekend. The Division's Environmental Specialist Jennifer Stirk says that collection sites are located in Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach and these events are not for businesses.

Stirk says there are a number of items that will be accepted and just a couple that won’t be. "Auto batteries, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides, automotive fluids, paint, fluorescent bulbs, and any other household hazardous waste you might have around your home. We're not taking tires or electronics."

The sites will only accept unmixed household hazardous waste. Needles will be accepted but only in approved containers that will not be returned.

Stirk says that residents can bring their household waste for free disposal year-round to the Tomka Landfill and the West Volusia Transfer Station.  This weekend’s locations are different. "We have one at the Ormond Beach Public Works. The other one is at the New Smyrna Beach Public Works. The times are from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m."

Both of the year-round locations have free paint exchange programs and electronic waste recycling.
