Teen Arrested After Deltona Park Shooting

DELTONA, Fla. - A 16-year-old from Deltona is in custody following a shooting in a local park that resulted in one injury. The incident occurred at Dwight Hawkins Park on January 15th.

According to a release from the Volusia Sheriff's Office, the shooting happened inside an SUV that was in the park at the time. When a deputy responded to the scene, they applied a tourniquet to the victim in the time until Deltona Fire Rescue arrived. The victim then made it to the hospital.

Further investigation led the VSO to the conclusion they announced in their Wednesday report: that the suspect had fired a gun from the back seat of the SUV, hitting the driver. Both the victim and other witnesses to the scene reportedly told detectives that it was an accidental shooting.

Still, deputies arrested suspect Anthoney Martinez on charges of aggravated battery with a firearm, illegal concealed carry, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. He was processed initially in the Volusia Family Resource Center before then being transferred over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
