Something New This Year: Make Your Property Tax Check Out Directly To the Tax Collector

Posted

DeLand, FL - This is the first year for paying your property taxes under Volusia County Tax Collector Will Roberts and there are some changes. One of the biggest is who you make your check payable to. "One of the biggest changes that people will notice, if they're writing a check, they make it out to Will Roberts, Tax Collector. They used to write it to the County of Volusia and/or Volusia County Revenue Division."

Roberts said checks were written to Volusia County because the county was acting as the tax collector. Now that it's an elected position, Roberts said he's ultimately responsible for making sure that everything that's collected is distributed from the property owner to the correct taxing authority.

People are asking questions on social media, some about why their check needs to be made out to Will Roberts. He said there's no opportunity for misuse on his part. "It does not go to a private checking account or anything like that. so, all our payments go into our tax collector account."
